East Race Waterway (South Bend) – Things to do near Potato Creek State Park
In the heart of the city water is diverted from the St. Joseph River to create the East Race Waterway, which is the first man-made whitewater rafting course in the country. On weekends during the summer season visitors can purchase day passes to experience the Class 2 rapids themselves.
River Walk / River Lights (South Bend)
In downtown South Bend there is a nice riverwalk/trail along the St. Joseph River and the East Race Waterway. The East Bank Trail is great for walking, running, or cycling. In addition to nice river views, it also takes visitors past wineries, restaurants, and more.
Operating 365 days a year, the colorful South Bend River Lights are a fixture in the downtown scene. The lights come on a half hour before sunset and stay on until sunrise, washing vibrant colors over the St. Joseph River as it flows through the city. The best viewing is from Colfax Bridge, Island Park, Pier Park, and Jefferson Bridge.
